This article employs highly charged, inflammatory language ('killing their unborn children,' 'scraped more times than the grill at Benihana,' 'dead kids') and frames abortion access as a cultural loss rather than a policy debate. The piece centers pro-life movement perspectives while dismissing pro-choice language as 'euphemisms' and 'the abortion lobby's preferred terminology,' revealing clear editorial alignment.
Primary voices: media outlet, public figure (Chelsea Handler), comedian (Shane Gillis)
Framing may shift as public opinion on abortion continues to evolve post-Dobbs; polling cited is from early 2022 and may not reflect current consensus.
When Hollywood’s biggest celebrities are finally free to laugh at and mock women for killing their unborn children on live television, you know the abortion industry is finally losing its decades-long chokehold on pop culture.
During Netflix’s Roast of Kevin Hart, which aired live on Sunday night, host Shane Gillis introduced the washed-up, unmarried, and childless 51-year-old Chelsea Handler with a provocative line about how many abortions she’s likely had.
“Chelsea is a Zionist. Not saying that’s a good or bad thing. Speaking of dead kids, she’s a big fan of abortions. Chelsea’s been scraped more times than the grill at Benihana,” Gillis told the audience.
Like all good comedy, it’s funny because it’s true. Handler has long been vocal about the “perks” of remaining childless and publicly discussed at least some of her past abortions. She once shared on a podcast that she got pregnant when she was 16, and her mother pushed her to get an abortion. “She was right. I was not ready,” Handler said.
Handler is a relic of an era where being childfree and vocal about abortion was culturally unassailable. In the post-Roe world, this type of public figure was a “self-empowering” woman. “You are not defined by the children that you bring into the world … you’re not defined by your relationships or being married,” is the type of vapid advice Handler has been known to spout off.
She has framed motherhood as optional at best and a trap at worst. In one memorable PSA-style bit, she sarcastically declared that “being childless and alone are everything they’re cracked up to be,” warning that once you have a child, “you never get to make another choice again.”
Women who once found this model inspiring are now finding cracks in the consensus, wondering if delaying marriage and children was the right choice after all. And men like Shane Gillis, who for decades have been lectured on never even thinking about questioning a woman’s “right to choose,” are now openly mocking women for killing their own offspring.
In the post-Dobbs world, the tide has shifted. The American public’s more moderate views on abortion might finally be making their way into the radical left entertainment industry. A Pew Research poll published in January of this year found that 76 percent of Americans want at least some limits on abortion. In 2022, over a month after the Dobbs decision was leaked, a Harvard/Harris poll found 72 percent of Americans would like abortion to be banned at no later than 15 weeks.
It’s a significant sign for the pro-life movement that comedians and celebrities can openly label abortions what they are — “dead kids” — instead of the past’s required regurgitation of the abortion lobby’s preferred euphemisms like “reproductive health care” or just the “terminations” of a “clump of cells.”
The sacred cow of abortion is now a punchline.
